Search Engine Optimisation takes into account the factors used by Google, Bing etc. when they position websites in their natural listings. The natural listings form the main body of a Search Engine’s pages. Paid listings are separate to natural listings. In a typical Google or Bing search, you can see the paid listings in the right column and in the yellow box at the top. Whilst the other free ads have been listed by the SE’s. Sites are graded by how relevant they are, and how important they are (according to the SE!).
Naturally our target is the top of the first page! We’re unlikely to get noticed if we’re number 8 on the tenth page! It isn’t possible to say for certain exactly which measures SE’s use to grade sites. The SE’s really don’t want anyone to know – so you can’t manipulate or ‘game’ their system.
So as time has gone on, a sophisticated industry has evolved to get the most from the listings. On the Search Engine side you have upgraded technological patents being regularly filed. Causing much mystification about their methods! On the other hand, there’s Search Engine Optimisation. This involves measuring various factors and doing empirical tests to establish the most important ones to target.
Both ‘off page’ and ‘on page’ optimisation is dealt with. There are also ‘off-web’ factors such as demographic and geographic information – but we have no control over this area. (Off-Page optimisation is examined in an additional feature.)
‘On-Page’ SEO
This involves making your web pages ‘friendlier’ to the Search Engines. This is the easy part and involves setting up your website ‘correctly’. Doing things such as: Utilising H1 and H2 Header Tags, Internal Linking, Keywords and Meta Tags.
Which may well sound like a foreign language to you! Actually, though on page work is straightforward it probably accounts for little. To be blunt, some would say it hardly has any effect at all. Previously we could make an impact with On Page configurations. That’s not how it is now though.
The only time that ‘on-page’ becomes important is when you have taken care of ‘off-page’ and have a lot of inbound ‘back-links’. When that’s happened, on-page factors can be optimised.
A Few Handy Pointers… Keywords and phrases that bring up massive results should be avoided by anyone new to SEO. For example, on Google’s Search Engine you’ll see 70 million listings in the UK for the term Car Insurance. When you’re just getting going, it’s not a great idea to face such huge competition!
However… A much smaller list (300k) comes up when I enter ‘Southampton car insurance’. (Assuming I was a car insurance provider in Southampton.) So a much more realistic target.
I’ve a much better chance in the rankings having added the word ‘Southampton’. Getting ranked for a term such as Car Insurance would take pots of money and a great deal of time. The competition would be fierce. Which is really not a good idea.
In fact, what we really need are terms that more specifically reflect our product or service. They’re known as long tail searches, because they’ll have several keywords. It depends on your competition, but long-tail searches can be up to 6 or 7 words. They’re usually around three or four.
We prefer to begin optimisation strategies with phrases that bring in less than five hundred thousand results. (In some cases, we may go with a higher count – if the current page 1 results are not well SEO’d.) We’ll automatically move up the ratings for the more popular search terms as we gain more back-links. Assuming everything goes to plan, we’ll hit the popular phrases in three to twelve months. This strategy is also far more targeted at the start. Frankly, we’re only interested in the customers who are looking specifically for what we offer. There’s much more chance these people will buy!
It’s a good idea to spread the back-links around your website. Limiting them to the home page is unwise. The Search Engines like this – especially Google. For example, build links to the pages that group products. They very frequently link up to a range of sub-pages, so driving appropriate terms to them can be very worthwhile. So don’t limit the back links to one page. How your site’s pages are managed and listed is gaining more and more attention from Google, Bing and Yahoo.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process of using specific techniques to get your site to the first page, and hopefully to the top of the search engine results page. You can accomplish this by carefully choosing keywords and posting them strategically in blog posts or articles on your sites pages. For example, your website is used to market an e-book on financial planning. You would use keywords like make money, earn money online, how to make more money, etc. When a person types one of these words into the browser of their chosen search engine, your site will appear. Next they click through to your site, like what you’re offering, and make a purchase. This person was actually searching for the product or service you are selling. This is far better than cold calling complete strangers that may or may not have any interest in what you’re offering. Many of the top salespeople these days are using SEO to generate plenty of financial sales leads.
SEO is always evolving. There’s article marketing, keyword density, pay-per-click, back links, and more. Study up on SEO, and you’ll see your business really take off. Stop using the cold calling techniques of the past. Start bringing your customers to you and finally get those financial sales leads you’ve been looking for.
